Understanding Keyboard Actuation Latency, Rapid Trigger & NKRO
Keyboard input latency consists of three primary components:
- Switch Actuation Distance: Distance key stem travels before closing the electrical contact (typically 1.2mm – 2.0mm, or 0.1mm on Hall-effect magnetic switches).
- Debounce Delay: Delay algorithm added to mechanical switches to prevent duplicate false presses (typically 2ms – 10ms).
- USB Scan Rate / Polling: Frequency keyboard MCU scans matrix and sends reports to PC (typically 1000Hz / 1ms or 8000Hz / 0.125ms).
N-Key Rollover (NKRO) means every single key press on your keyboard is registered independently, even if you press 10+ keys simultaneously. Office keyboards without NKRO suffer from "ghosting", where additional keypresses are silently dropped by the controller matrix.
Rapid Trigger dynamically actuates and resets keys based on physical travel distance rather than fixed switch reset points. This allows instant counter-strafing and rapid key re-presses in games like Valorant and CS2.
